Rickford joins Provincial colleagues to announce 5 Year Tourism Marketing Strategy for Northern Ontario
January 20, 2009

Thunder Bay:  "I am excited to announce our government’s ongoing commitment to helping Northern Ontario's tourism industry grow," said Kenora MP, Greg Rickford, on behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor. "We understand the importance of tourism to the economy both nationally and regionally and are proud to support the growth of this industry in Northern Ontario."

Tourism activity accounts for 2% of Canada's GDP – equivalent to agriculture, forestry, fishing and hunting combined.  Across Canada the tourism industry generated $19.7 billion in government revenues.

The Federal Government, through FedNor, has been working with the Province of Ontario to support Northern Ontario's tourism industry. These efforts are in line with other initiatives we have taken to diversify the economy here to help Northern Ontario emerge from this downturn stronger than before.

The successful partnership with the province — which is now in its fifth year — focuses on providing training opportunities to Northern Ontarians in the tourism industry and developing marketing initiatives that promote tourism in our region. In addition to these training opportunities, we have initiated some unique marketing campaigns promoting Northern Ontario.

These collaborative efforts are paying off. This strategy is designed to reach consumers through a coordinated voice.  The main goal is to maximize the impact of our marketing by aligning our efforts with our stakeholders. This strategy will help regions across the North use the right message to reach targeted markets.

One of the key marketing tools is our new Web portal that will showcase and highlight the distinctive features of Northern Ontario. Unlike typical websites, this interactive site will allow consumers to share their experiences with other potential travelers, increasing the interest in our region.

"This exciting new five-year Tourism Marketing Strategy for Northern Ontario and the Web portal unveiled today illustrates our government's commitment to working with industry and provincial partners to enhance tourism development here in the North. By taking on this common goal, we are helping to ensure the future growth and prosperity of our region," concluded Rickford.
