Applications for Canada Summer Jobs Now Open

Kenora MP, Greg Rickford, would like to advise constituents that the Canada Summer Jobs program is now accepting applications. Don’t miss this opportunity to apply for a wage subsidy for a summer student.

Canada Summer Jobs
is a Government of Canada initiative that provides funding to help employers create summer job opportunities for students. It is designed to focus on local priorities, while achieving tangible results for both students and their communities.

Canada Summer Jobs is about:

  • providing work experiences for students;
  • supporting organizations, including those that provide important community services; and
  • recognizing that local circumstances, community needs and priorities vary widely.

Canada Summer Jobs is focused on encouraging not-for-profit organizations, public sector employers and small businesses with 50 or fewer employees, to create jobs that not only meet their needs, but also benefit students looking to gain work experience.

Wage Subsidies for not-for-profit employers are up to 100 per cent of the provincial/territorial adult minimum hourly wage. Public and private-sector employers are eligible for up to 50 per cent of the provincial/territorial adult minimum hourly wage. An employer may choose to pay more than the minimum wage; however, the percentage reimbursed through CSJ will apply only to the applicable provincial/territorial adult minimum wage rate.

Canada’s Economic Action plan as introduced in March of 2009, allocated two years of additional funding to assist young Canadians find summer jobs. The Government provided this temporary additional funding to help create extra summer jobs and to recognize that the current labour market disruptions may create difficulties for youth trying to find summer employment. The financial impact of this for Kenora is $20,842 for 2010. The total Canada Summer Jobs budget for the Kenora riding will be $170,057.

“In light of the current economy, it is more important than ever that we help our students,” said Rickford. “This means creating more jobs that will provide vital work experiences and prepare them for the future.”
Employers can apply online, print an application form from the Web site to complete by hand, or get an application form by visiting a Service Canada Centre.

The application deadline is February 26, 2010.

Applications will then be assessed and successful applicants will be notified in May.
