KENORA, Ontario
— Today, the Honourable Jim Flaherty, Minister of Finance, on behalf of the Honourable Tony Clement, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for FedNor, announced a $2.4 million Government of Canada investment, through FedNor, directed  at projects that support community economic development and small business in the Kenora region (see attached information sheet). The funding is from FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program and the Community Futures Program.

“Today’s announcement demonstrates the Government of Canada’s ongoing commitment to develop sustainable communities and increase employment opportunities in Northwestern Ontario,” stated Minister Flaherty.

“Our government is helping to create a strong and diversified economy in the Kenora region through community-based initiatives,” said Minister Flaherty. “Among other things, our investments will support waterfront development, strategic planning, capacity building and the

growth of small and medium-sized enterprises.”

The FedNor investments announced today complement new initiatives introduced as part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, such as the Community Adjustment Fund and Infrastructure Stimulus Fund, which are helping Northern communities overcome the challenges brought on by the global economic downturn, while building for future growth and prosperity.

“With FedNor support, communities in this region are encouraging private sector investment through a number of strategic initiatives,” said Len Compton, Kenora Mayor. “We are especially proud of our Port of Kenora project, which is redeveloping our harbourfront to increase pedestrian, vehicular and marine traffic to the area.”

By supporting the people, communities and business in the Kenora region through its programs and services, FedNor is opening doors and building futures for a prosperous Northern Ontario.
